this mornings events have got me thinking about things.

i love peanut butter, not the sweet kind but i like the old fashioned peanut butter, usually laura scudder's with no sugar or preservatives - it just tastes better imo.

i put it on everything including pancakes which are really good with peanut butter and maple syrup.

Good quality, large curd cottage cheese with Flamin' Hot Cheetos mixed in. The cool of the cottage cheese counteracts the hot of the cheetos.

Peanut butter and bacon sandwiches. Jiff (creamy), good bacon (maple or brown sugar flavored is great), toasted bread.

Pickels and Pringles. Stack 2 or 3 regular Pringles chips and 1 dill pickle slice. yum.

Fried bologna sandwiches.

Hot dogs fried in beer. I don't do that one very often, but sometimes.

BTW, boiled hot dogs are just plain nasty. Hot dogs have to at least be fried if not grilled.

axal's comments on the thread were just asinine - how all the atheists in his area were at the strip clubs fighting over women and fornicating!

i have to say that i live in a small town and have been here for half a century, and i couldn't name five people that i know here who are atheist.

any one of those things would disprove Genesis and destroy the foundation for the need for a Messiah, the resurrection, etc. And if Genesis is NOT literal, than the whole Bible is suspect.

Primate Dave: Your experience and mine as far as the Witnesses and evolution are VERY similar. I was a stuanch defender of the JW view, but I would hear science stories on public radio or the television, or read articles, and I realized, as you did, that there are two huge weaknesses in both the Bible and in the foundation for religions that take the Bible literally - the creation account and the flood of Noah.
What makes these two accounts so vulnerable is that they are so easily attacked. For instance, I knew that if you could prove that there were humans around more than 6,032 years ago, that animals ate animals prior to the flood, that there was snow and rain prior to the flood, that the entire world was not deluged with water four-some-odd-thousand years ago - any one of those things would disprove Genesis and destroy the foundation for the need for a Messiah, the resurrection, etc. And if Genesis is NOT literal, than the whole Bible is suspect.
Well, it doesn't take much effort to disprove all of those points in Genesis - and a hell of a lot more. When Genesis collapsed, so did my belief in the Witnesses, followed very shortly by my belief in a god.

My exact experience as well. For me the most damaging thing for my faith was the History Channel. Then a few books that wouldn't have been borg approved. It all came down like a house of cards.

1) As far as the insults you just threw...dunno why. I'm not being egocentric. I explained in my last post why I though this thread might have been directed at me, but I acknowledged that I could have been mistaken. Fair enough. You weren't aiming the thread at me. I said that that might be the case. If you were following that exact timing of posts, perhaps you would see why I felt it might apply to me. That's all. There was no need to start with the insults.

2) As I have said twice now, I do understand the term "depravity". So knock it off please. Stop insulting my intelligence.

3) To clarify, yet again, my problem with Perry's use of "depraviy" on the other thread was not with the definition. He wasn't just tossing that word around, but was actively trying to disparage another person because that person isn't a christian. It doesn't matter what your christian definition of "depravity" is, what matters is that, it appears that Perry's christian definition on that thread was using the most extreme definition and implying that the other poster was incapible of being a "good" person because he is an atheist.

Just as an respectful observation LT, when I first came to this board a few months back, your posts always seemed to be balanced, and/or served as a sort of mediator type function between posters when the debate was getting a little too hot. I always, always liked it when you dropped into a thread. Your wry humor and sometimes quite brief comments would often leave me puzzled while I tried to determine your meaning. Sometimes you have been a little too cryptic for my tastes, but I appreciated that there was probably some deeper meaning that you meant us to see. I have, however, noticed that very recently your posting seems to be getting a bit nasty or even weird. Only you would know why that is. Please don't take offense to that. It is just an observation.

Really Bad Day Today!

i woke up to my kids all sick, a letter in the mailbox (put there sneakily sometime early this morning) saying that we should 'return to serve jehovah and become one of the family again' (cannot understand the association of meeting attendance = being part of a family.

family is family no matter what they choose to believe.

) and to top it all off, our 10 year old dog who has been really sick past week, had to be put down a couple of hours ago.

Greetings Great One!

I'm not sure if the genesis (slight pun intended - forgive me) for this thread was because of my comment on the other thread, but it would appear so given your zeroing in constantly on "depravity". I want to assure you here, as I also stated on that thread, that I understand the use of the term "depravity" in the religious sense, and forgive me for this, but be that as it may, I still object to it being thrown about and applied to atheists. The point that was being made by Perry in the other thread that caused my objection, was his application of the term in such a way that the target of the word was being made out to appear to have no moral/ethical center or character. In other words, the atheist can't possibly be a "good" person because they don't have Jeeeheebus in their life. That is what I find offensive, no matter which definition of "depravity" you want to use. Now, given that, I may be totally off the mark here and this thread wasn't aimed at me. It does however seem that way given the flurry of posts that happened on Perry's thread right after I raised my objection.

As to the issue of needing further insight into theological terms in order to have a reasonable discussion, we (atheists) are, perhaps, a tad brighter than you might want to think and can generally "get it" from the context. If not, as other posters have mentioned, we probably won't be commenting on a thread dealing with deep religious beliefs - we don't care (at least I don't). Why would we?

I could only read about a fourth of it before I had to stop because it is just the exact description of my ~~satan~~ mom. I am actually sick to my stomach now because this is absolutely the way she is and she has pretty much screwed me up in my head in many ways.

I have always described her to others as an M&M. She has this sweet veeeery thin shell over this huge inner core. The thin shell of seeming goodnes is what non-family members know, and they can't uinderstand at all when I say she is actually evil inside (the huge inner core).

Typical comment from Mom: "I never get to see you." (said with pouty face and special sing-song emphasis on "never")

Reality: We live next door, visit her frequently, and would never stop her from coming over, but somehow we have to go next doot to see her, she, for some reason, can't be bothered to come to our house.

The whole golden-child/scape-goat thing is absolutely spot on. Last summer, one of my brothers (he's the golden-boy in our family) got completely out of hand with my wife and I for no good reason, and Mom ...well doesn't matter. Point is, he can do no wrong, even if it involves threatening to kill people, but she refuses to see why I don't want to hang out with him any more.

I hope I don't screw up with our son the way she did with her kids.

Thank you for making that last post on macro-evolution. I, for one, feel that evolution is the correct explanation of things, but I had not considered that macro-evo is really just as you say in your post. For what it's worth, you truely helped my understanding today with your very clear explanation of how we really shouldn't be using the macro term at all since we are just basically creating artificial little boxes to put life in.

It may seem like a small thing, but to me this was a major "A-ha!" moment. It doesn't happen too often that I get to directly contact someone who has provided some great enlightenment to me, so...

does the belief that there is no all-loving diety in which to be accountable to make it easier or harder to treat and judge others they way that you want to be treated and judged?.

since evolution supposes that life and ultimately man who is at the top of the chain got here through a process of the fittest dominating and killing off the weaker, and since most modern evolutionists in democracies no longer think that this is good to practice, how do you deal with the fact that you are a living contradiction of your own belief since you pronounce the same thing both good and bad?

No, that isn't how it works. It isn't a race to a finish line between two organisms that are trying to beat each other. What you are saying implies a conscious action on the part of the survivor. You then go on to base an argument built on sand.

Evolution, in a nutshell, works like this: genes that give some advantage to a species, cause that particular carrier to survive where others of the same species would not. Eventually these genes become so common in the gene pool of the species that they are mainstream and the entire species begins to carry the gene. These genes are therefore selected naturally as the dominant genes. This happens over long periods of time and doesn't effect individuals so much as entire populations. Also your comment that brings thought into the process has no place in the discussion. People will pass on the genes they have, end of story. Essentially, man "dominating" man is not an evidence of evolution. It is an evidence of poor manners.

Now on to the point im trying to make. When someone who does not think there is God, they go to bars and strip clubs and if they dont, its got to be drugs then.
